This car could represent a new direction for the John Cooper Works sub-brand.Mini teased the electric Cooper looking sizzling on Twitter, we messed up with the images in Photoshop, and what we saw more clearly was the box-style rear fender. Now, thanks to Tuesday's announcement, we know what the teasers are for.

The somewhat regrettable answer is the GAME SANOOK JCW-inspired "Mini Electric Pacesetter", which is designated as the latest and greatest safety car for the Formula E world championship.We say sadly because this looks great and the sizzling electric hatchback looks like what the Mini should be building these days, but the Electric Pacesetter isn't legal, although the Mini says it might represent something new. The Electric Pacesetter is based on Mini's Cooper electric SE model and has an electric powertrain of 181 horsepower and a total weight of 286 pounds lighter than the conventional SE.The car was co-designed by Mini, BMW Motorsport, FIA and Formula E and will make its official race debut on April 10 in Rome during the third E-Prix.
