The Biden Cybersecurity EO: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly—But Mostly Good



President Biden’s Executive Order (EO), Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity, is one of the most in-depth approaches to U.S. cybersecurity ever. And at 30 pages, it is also one of the longest EOs. Overall, it is a much-needed dedicated effort to help stem the accelerating rate of cyber-attacks that leave the United States vulnerable to espionage, crimes, and damage to critical infrastructure.

Further, the sense of urgency conveyed through the near-term deadlines underscores the rapidly evolving cyber threat—one that can’t wait for the typical government timeline. The same goes for mandated fixes to existing gaps in implementing the Cybersecurity Framework, such as creating standardized incident response playbooks. Critically, the Biden Administration emphasized that the EO’s actions cannot be accomplished by government alone and that public-private cooperation is essential to any solution. Indeed, such a partnership is the only way these complex issues can be addressed in a short period of time, with any hope of sufficient diligence.
