Google, BMW, Volvo and Samsung sign deep-sea bans
![]() Google, BMW, Volvo and ลองเล่นสล็อตฟรี Samsung have signed a temporary ban on deep-sea mining after discussions with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF).The four companies have agreed not to source any minerals from the seabed or use them in their products or supply chains, and said they would not fund deep-sea mining activities. Deep-sea mining companies want to extract cobalt, copper, nickel and manganese, the most popular primary materials used in battery production, which can be found at the seabed at depths of 4 km to 6 km. WWF and other conservation groups say these materials can be found in arid regions and from recycled goods, and said the practice could destroy ocean ecosystems and all habitats.A statement from WWF on Wednesday said: "As the vast majority of deep-sea ecosystems have not been explored and understood, such activities will inadvertently cause myopia.BMW says raw materials from deep-sea mining It is "not an option" for companies today, as there are not enough scientific findings to assess environmental risks.Google and Volvo did not immediately respond to email requests for comment, but South Korea's Samsung SDI said it was the first battery maker to participate in the WWF initiative.Deep-sea mining companies, however, are pushing for plans to acquire a license to explore the ocean floor in hopes of extracting and selling the minerals they find to carmakers and battery companies.Norway said it could license companies to deep-sea mining by 2023, possibly one of the first countries to harvest seabed metal.Jessica Battle, head of WWF's No Deep Seabed Mining Initiative, said removing natural resources from the seabed is a nearsighted move with potentially devastating consequences. She told CGTN: “Digging in the deep sea will generate large amounts of feather sediment and will scrape off all over the area where the animals live. There are no plants there because of the darkness. But there are many unknown animals and bacteria. So we run the risk of losing an organism that we know nothing about. But we are also reducing our chances of discovering, for example, new drugs, such as new vaccines or new medical products for treating cancer or another disease. |
